2009 Field Hockey Earns Academic Awards From Coaches Association

Northampton, MA: Smith Field Hockey received both individual and team awards from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.

Six individual student-athletes were named to the Division III National Academic Squad. The squad recognizes student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2009-2010 academic year. The six Pioneers recognized were first year Sophia Demuynck (Mount Holly, NJ), sophomore Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) and seniors Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD), Mary Kate Long (Harrisville, NH), Michelle Walsh (Northampton, MA) and Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY). Long and Winter are four year award recipients.

Additionally, the team was also honored with the Division III National Team Award. This award recognizes institutions that achieve a minimum GPA of 3.0 during the first semester of the 2009-2010 academic year.

2009 Field Hockey Players Receive NEWMAC Honors

Northampton, MA: Sophomore Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) was named to the New England Women’s and Men’s All Conference (NEWMAC) Field Hockey All Conference Team while Mary Kate Long (Harrisville, NH), Natalie Wickles (Hatfield, MA) and Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY) all received NEWMAC Academic All Conference recognition.

Hopkins, who was voted onto the NEWMAC All Conference Second Team, led the Pioneers with 8 goals and 3 assists this season.  Long and Winter make their third appearances on the NEWMAC Academic All Conference Team while Wickles was honored for the second time.  Honorees must have earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 after the 2009 spring semester, achieved second year academic status and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season.

 

2008 NFHCA Division III National Academic Team

Congratulations to the entire Smith Field Hockey team for their outstanding job on the field and in the classroom!  Smith Field Hockey has been recognized by the NFHCA as one of the recipients of the National Academic Team Award!  In addition, 6 members recieved individual honors earning a spot on the National Academic Squad including: Trina Campbell, Becky Capute, Sarah Knowles, Mary Kate Long, Natalie Wickles, and Margaret Winter.

NEWMAC Announces 2008 Field Hockey Academic All-Conference Team Natalie

Smith Colleges Athlete of the Week … starting 10/20/08 is….

First year Sarah Knowles (North Kingstown, RI) was an offensive leader in helping the Pioneers close out the week 2-1. Knowles tallied her first collegiate goal with an assist from a teammate in Smith’s 3-1 victory against Western New England College. Ending the week against NEWMAC rival MIT, Sarah pushed a rebound past MIT’s goalkeeper to give the Pioneers their first conference victory in double overtime.

 

 Smith Athletic Department Athlete of the Week (starting Sept 29th) is….

Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY), goalkeeper for the Smith Pioneers was the anchor of the team this week against Elms College and NEWMAC foe Wellesley College. With a win over Elms and a defeat by Wellesley, Winter tallied 22 saves as she defended 45 shots. She played the entirety of both games.
